Key topics in energy efficiency in buildings for the end of 2025: send your contributions!
BUILD UP’s second-half 2025 Topics of the Month (TOM) include Key topics such as solar technologies, local financial tools, energy performance standards, customer support through one-stop-shops or energy poverty. Do you want to contribute and spread your expertise?
From solar energy integration to customer support through one-stop-shops, the topics in these last months of 2025 follow the BUILD UP Themes and focus on key issues driving the energy transition in buildings.
Whether you're working on a cutting-edge project, involved in local initiatives, or have insights to share, we are calling on all members of our community —researchers, policymakers, practitioners, innovators or any building professionals— to contribute with relevant content, such as news, case studies, papers, events or tools.
BUILD UP Topics of the Month 2025
July/August: Maximising solar energy in buildings
In these two months, we will delve into integrating solar technologies, including photovoltaics and solar thermal systems, into building design. Featuring case studies and expert analysis, discussions will also tackle obstacles like financial barriers and regulatory complexities.
September: Financial instruments and initiatives at the local level
Stakeholders will gain insights into navigating financial instruments, grants, and incentives to fund energy-efficient projects. The month’s focus on successful local initiatives and public-private collaborations promises valuable lessons for driving innovation.
October: Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS)
Attention shifts to Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). Good practices across Europe will illustrate how MEPS help lower emissions and improve building efficiency.
November: Supporting customers - The role of One-Stop Shops
Stakeholders will explore the role of centralised hubs in guiding customers through energy-efficient renovations. Real-world models will highlight customer engagement’s crucial role, while discussions will address sustainability challenges in maintaining such support hubs.
December: Energy poverty and vulnerable people: how to not leave them behind in the energy transition of the building sector
December’s Topic of the Month was selected based on our community input. The relationship between energy poverty, thermal discomfort, heating and cooling insecurity, and indoor environmental quality is crucial for human well-being in the built environment. Ensuring a healthy and safe living environment for vulnerable groups, along with capacity-building activities for energy system improvements, is essential to advancing equity within the built environment and enhancing overall well-being. This month's focus will adopt a two-scale approach (city and district) to energy retrofitting policy guidelines.
