Healthy Buildings, Healthy Lives: Understanding citizens’ perceptions across Europe

A new survey across six European countries presents citizens’ perceptions of indoor conditions, resilience to climate extremes, and priorities for healthier buildings.

Editorial Team

A recent citizens’ survey conducted by Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE) and the VELUX Group examines how people across six European countries perceive the healthiness of the buildings they use daily. The study collected responses from 6,102 adults in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom, covering a wide range of housing types and living environments.

The study highlights that Europeans spend most of their time indoors, making the quality of homes, workplaces, and public buildings central to well‑being. Respondents were asked how their buildings perform, how indoor environments influence their health, and what improvements they consider necessary.

The results indicate that citizens expect clearer information, better-performing indoor environments, and greater attention to health‑related aspects of buildings. The survey also reflects growing interest in how design, maintenance, and renovation practices can support healthier living and working spaces.
