Serial renovation is gaining scale in Germany: a €23 million project in Hagen is relying on industrialisation and prefabrication to accelerate the decarbonisation of the residential building stock.
With an investment of €23 million, the Berlin-based company ecoworks is driving forward in Hagen, the largest cooperative serial refurbishment project developed in Germany to date. The initiative includes the energy modernisation of twelve residential buildings and 192 flats built in the 1960s, intending to achieve the KfW EH55 standard and progress towards climate-neutral operation.
The project reflects a growing trend across Europe: shifting part of the refurbishment process away from traditional construction sites towards industrialised methods based on prefabrication, digitalisation and planning supported by artificial intelligence. The strategy seeks to reduce costs, shorten intervention times, and minimise disruption for residents. In addition to new thermal building envelopes and photovoltaic systems, the scheme also includes improvements in comfort and efficiency that will reduce the overall energy demand of the complex by 36%.
