This article examines how building performance data can be transformed into meaningful, actionable information that supports better decisions on renovation, investment, and policy. As the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive places greater emphasis on the use of building performance data, the OpenBEP4EU project explores how Energy Performance Certificates and Smart Readiness Indicator assessments can become more transparent, comparable, and interoperable through the use of shared standards and open calculation methods.

The article highlights the importance of moving beyond data collection towards data usability. By promoting common data models, open-source approaches and harmonised methodologies, OpenBEP4EU aims to improve the accessibility and consistency of building performance information across Europe. It also demonstrates how combining Energy Performance Certificate and Smart Readiness Indicator data can support more informed decisions, helping public authorities, building owners and investors prioritise renovation measures, improve building performance and develop more effective long-term strategies for the built environment.
