New heating models for European cities

A cross-border project between Germany and Poland demonstrates how renewable district heating networks can strengthen energy security and accelerate the decarbonisation of the built environment in Europe.

The  UNITED HEAT project, funded by the CEF Energy programme, proposes a transformation of thermal supply in buildings through a renewable district heating network connecting the cities of Görlitz (Germany) and Zgorzelec (Poland). The initiative aims to replace fossil fuels with a system that integrates different energy sources, such as solar thermal, biomass, waste heat recovery, and power-to-heat solutions.

This approach makes it possible to move towards a more diversified and resilient energy model, adapted to local needs and aligned with European climate objectives. Beyond its technical dimension, the project highlights cross-border cooperation as a mechanism to optimise infrastructure and resources. European support facilitates the development of the project and its potential replicability.
