Pilot explores smart heat pump control to support flexibility in buildings
A new pilot by Energised Futures and Panasonic tests intelligent heat pump control and demand response in European homes.
Energised Futures, Centrica’s research and innovation unit, has partnered with Panasonic to test advanced control of heat pumps as part of the EU‑funded DEDALUS project. The pilot examines how automated optimisation can support demand response in Dublin homes, combining technical development with manufacturing expertise and installer insight.
The project uses digital twins and predictive algorithms to manage Panasonic heat pumps remotely, building on earlier work under the MESH programme. The system shifts operation towards periods of low‑carbon and lower‑cost electricity while maintaining comfort, reducing running costs and emissions, and contributing to grid balancing and renewable integration in buildings.
Findings from the Dublin trial will inform related pilots in Austria, Denmark, Italy, Spain and Romania, helping to assess how smart heating solutions perform across different climates, housing types and energy systems. The programme concluded at the end of April, after which results from all participating countries will be analysed and shared.
The pilot also applies a user‑centred approach to understand factors influencing participation in demand response, including comfort, data privacy and energy literacy. Workshops, segmentation analysis and interface testing support this work, drawing on behavioural and socio‑economic insights.
