The Tavros Project, situated in the Athenian district of Moschato-Tavros, represents a pioneering effort to deliver high-quality, energy-efficient homes. Led by the Hellenic Passive House Institute in collaboration with local authorities and volunteers, the initiative involves the deep renovation of a mid-20th-century social housing block to meet Passive House standards—one of the most rigorous benchmarks for energy efficiency worldwide.

Through the integration of advanced insulation, airtight construction, triple-glazed windows, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, the building’s energy demand has been reduced by approximately 90%. The addition of solar panels further elevates the structure to a Positive Energy Building, capable of generating more energy than it consumes. This transformation not only eliminates energy bills for residents but also shields them from future energy price volatility.

Beyond its technical achievements, the project serves as a living laboratory for education and community engagement. It offers hands-on training for engineers, students, and construction professionals, while also acting as a replicable model for similar renovations across Athens and beyond. With over 250 comparable buildings identified in the vicinity, the Tavros Project stands as a compelling case for scalable, citizen-led climate action through energy-efficient housing.
