In a gesture of both technical and political support, the Informal Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) Gathering welcomed the European Commission’s newly published guidelines for the transposition of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The guidance reinforces the role of indoor environmental quality as a fundamental component in assessing building energy performance, highlighting parameters such as temperature, humidity, ventilation, and the presence of pollutants.

The IEQ community—comprising European experts and organisations—praised the document’s clarity and ambition, while urging Member States to broaden its scope to include aspects such as lighting, given its direct impact on occupant health and productivity.

The informal gathering reaffirmed a shared commitment to promoting healthy, safe, and comfortable indoor environments in parallel with the European Union’s climate and energy goals. Participants emphasised that high-performance buildings must integrate energy efficiency and human well-being as inseparable principles. In this context, the IEQ group pledged to continue supporting the national implementation of the guidelines, fostering knowledge exchange and monitoring progress across Member States.
