The thermal transition needs skilled workers

The expansion of heat pumps in Europe depends increasingly less on technology and more on the ability to train qualified professionals capable of installing, maintaining and scaling clean solutions.

The large-scale deployment of heat pumps across Europe is facing an obstacle less visible than financing or regulation: the shortage of skilled professionals. The European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) warns that the transition towards electrified thermal systems will require hundreds of thousands of installers, technicians and specialised engineering professionals before 2030.

In response, several European projects have begun coordinating efforts to accelerate technical training and adapt the skills of the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) sector to new regulatory and technological requirements. Initiatives such as SKILLSAFE EU and HEATCRAFTHP are developing safety protocols for natural refrigerants, digital learning platforms, and hands-on training focused on installation and maintenance.

Beyond training itself, the debate highlights a structural issue: the energy transition will depend not only on industrial innovation, but also on Europe’s ability to build a prepared, coordinated workforce capable of responding to the pace of electrification required for the decarbonisation of buildings and thermal systems.
