Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI)
Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI)
The smart readiness indicator (SRI) is a Commission initiative under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive that measures a building’s ability to use smart technologies. These technologies aid in decarbonisation, while also offering more comfortable and efficient living environments.
The Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) is an initiative of the European Commission designed to assess how effectively buildings can use smart technologies to improve energy performance, comfort, and overall efficiency. It evaluates a building’s capacity to sense and interpret information, communicate with occupants and energy networks, and respond intelligently to changing conditions. By highlighting the benefits of digital and automated building systems, the SRI supports the EU’s wider goals of decarbonising the building sector and promoting more flexible, user‑centred energy use.
As a voluntary scheme implemented by Member States, the SRI provides a common European method for rating and communicating a building’s level of smart readiness. This helps owners, developers, and public authorities identify opportunities for upgrading building systems and encourages investment in technologies that enhance performance and interaction with the energy grid. By fostering transparency and comparability, the SRI aims to accelerate the uptake of smart solutions across Europe’s building stock and contribute to a more efficient, resilient, and sustainable built environment.
