Building Renovation Passport: a roadmap to a greener future

EU-funded research projects are developing digital renovation planning tools that support stepwise building upgrades and inform long-term investment decisions in the built environment.

Editorial Team

The European Union is supporting the development and deployment of Building Renovation Passports (BRPs) through several EU-funded research and innovation projects under the Horizon Europe framework. These initiatives aim to provide building owners and professionals with structured digital tools to plan staged renovations in line with EU energy and climate objectives.

One such initiative is the RETIME project – Urban Adaptation and Alert Solutions for a TIMEly (re)Action, co-funded by the European Union with a total budget of €5.48 million. The project runs from 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2028 and involves 18 partners. Within RETIME, the Building Renovation Passport is developed as a digital solution supporting urban adaptation and risk reduction strategies.

The Building Renovation Passport is presented as a digital tool that provides building owners and managers with a step-by-step renovation roadmap. It enables users to define renovation scenarios over time, and to identify renovation measures related to building envelopes, energy systems, ventilation, cooling, and indoor environmental quality.

The renovation roadmap logic is based on a sequence of measures addressing both energy performance improvement and building resilience, taking into account existing vulnerabilities, ageing building components, and unexploited energy-saving potential. End-users can customise their renovation scenarios using information stored in a Digital Building Logbook module, ensuring consistency between technical data and planned renovation actions.

In addition to energy efficiency, the Building Renovation Passport outlines expected outcomes such as energy savings, reduced energy poverty, and improved indoor comfort. The passport is designed to support informed decision-making by building owners while aligning renovation planning with broader EU objectives on sustainable buildings and climate resilience.
