Innovative solar energy: Europe’s 2025 roadmap
The EU has unveiled an ambitious recommendation to accelerate the deployment of innovative solar technologies and smart grids. This strategic initiative aims to cut energy costs, drive the energy transition, and strengthen Europe’s energy autonomy.
The European Commission has issued a strategic recommendation aimed at accelerating the adoption of innovative renewable energy technologies, with a particular focus on solar energy.
The document calls on Member States to allocate at least 5% of their new renewable energy capacity to emerging technologies such as floating solar, infrastructure-integrated solar, and agrivoltaics. It also promotes the designation of specific zones for electricity grids and storage infrastructure to facilitate the efficient integration of these sources into the European power system. This initiative aligns with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the revised Directive (EU) 2018/2001, which sets a renewable energy target of 42.5% by 2030.
The recommendation further addresses the need to reform regulatory and tariff frameworks to foster innovation, reduce energy system costs, and encourage the participation of emerging technologies in support schemes. Member States are urged to streamline permitting procedures, promote the hybridisation of renewable technologies, and introduce non-price criteria in public tenders that reward innovation. The document also highlights the importance of training, interinstitutional cooperation, and data collection to overcome technical and administrative barriers.
This roadmap represents a decisive step towards a more resilient, intelligent, and sustainable European energy system.
