Green infrastructure for Bosnia and Herzegovina

The European Union (EU) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are driving forward energy efficiency and the modernisation of key infrastructure in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The European Union and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have jointly announced an investment of €10 million aimed at enhancing energy efficiency across up to 173 public buildings in the Canton of Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Channelled through the Regional Energy Efficiency Programme (REEP), the initiative will support a range of interventions, including thermal insulation, window replacement, and the modernisation of heating and lighting systems. The primary objectives are to significantly reduce energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and operational costs, while simultaneously improving comfort levels in schools, healthcare centres, and administrative buildings.

In parallel, Sarajevo is set to benefit from an ambitious overhaul of its water supply network, financed through a €25 million loan from the EBRD and a €3.8 million grant from the EU. The modernisation of 1,119 kilometres of pipeline is expected to drastically reduce water losses—currently exceeding 70%—and provide connections for approximately 4,000 new households.

Both initiatives underscore the EU’s commitment to urban sustainability and infrastructure resilience in the Western Balkans, while also fostering local employment and strengthening regional cooperation.
