Two design challenges for innovative facades by MEZeroE project

MEZeroE project is launching two design challenges together with Focchi Group and Pellini. The challenges are targeted at students and young researchers who are interested in rethink about facade components in an innovative way.

Giulia Leghissa

Pellini’s challenge: Rethink light. Redesign comfort

The goal of this challenge is to design a perforation pattern that transforms how natural light enters indoor spaces, blending art, comfort, and sustainability (e.g. in hospitals, schools, offices, homes).

The design should:

  • shape light in a meaningful and creative way
  • promote comfort, focus, or relaxation indoors
  • be usable in real spaces

Focchi Group’s challenge: Modular facades that senses, interacts, and optimises

The goal of this challenge is to design a multifunctional façade system that integrates smart technologies, such as IoT sensors, sun-shading, BIPV, or embedded heating/cooling systems. The concept should enhance sustainability, comfort, and performance by responding intelligently to environmental conditions.

The design should:

  • enable smart systems that interact with the climate or occupants to work across different building types
  • prioritise modularity, sustainability and performance
  • demonstrate how facades can contribute to smarter, more comfortable buildings

The prizes include: 1,000€ cash, public promotion on the MEZeroE platform and potential collaboration with Pellini/Focchi Group. The deadline for submission is 8 September 2025 at 23:59 (GMT +1).
