Energy efficiency for a university in Ukraine
A university building in the Ukrainian city of Poltava has completed an energy renovation featuring automated heating controls and new metering systems, benefiting nearly 3,000 students and staff.
Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic University, in central Ukraine, has completed the energy renovation of its academic Building F, used by 2,888 students and doctoral candidates and 86 academic staff. The works took place between January 2025 and September 2026 and were financed through a €1.75 million grant from the Eastern Europe Energy Efficiency and Environment Partnership (E5P) fund.
The intervention introduced automated heating controls and improved metering systems, aimed at reducing energy consumption and improving comfort. The project also enhanced accessibility through new ramps and tactile navigation and incorporated a shelter with capacity for more than 400 people, enabling in-person teaching to continue during air-raid alerts. The building also provides classrooms for 1,422 students, specialised laboratories and computer rooms.
The renovation forms part of a broader modernisation of the campus. The European Investment Bank (EIB) Ukraine Higher Education project covers ten buildings at the university with €10.8 million in financing and is part of a programme aimed at improving the energy efficiency of 16 Ukrainian universities.
