Smart building management systems: key to sustainability
Smart Building Management Systems (SBMS) are essential for sustainable cities. They integrate HVAC, lighting, security, and energy, optimising resources and connecting buildings with wider urban infrastructure.

With urban populations set to rise from 55% today to 68% by 2050, sustainability has become a central challenge for cities. Smart Building Management Systems (SBMS), which combines Internet of Things (IoT), automation, and artificial intelligence, is crucial for efficiently managing building systems—from climate control to lighting and security.
These systems not only optimise energy consumption but also enable buildings to interact with broader urban infrastructure.
However, implementing SBMS faces significant challenges. Legacy infrastructure, with isolated systems such as Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC), makes convergence to unified IP networks difficult. Additionally, cybersecurity is an increasing concern, as interconnected systems expand the attack surface. Strategic planning is therefore essential, with early collaboration between IT teams, providers, and building managers.
The key to success lies in collaboration and transparency. Establishing common sustainability indicators and sharing data allows all stakeholders—from owners to service providers—to align their efforts and continuously improve system performance over time.
