European push for more efficient solutions

The European Commission is investing €2.9 billion in net-zero technologies to accelerate decarbonisation of the built environment through innovation in materials, processes, and energy efficiency.

Editorial Team

The European Commission has announced a €2.9 billion investment in 61 pioneering net-zero technology projects, several of which have direct implications for the sustainable building sector. Channelled through the Innovation Fund, this financing aims to accelerate decarbonisation in energy-intensive sectors through solutions such as low-impact materials, process electrification, energy efficiency, and carbon capture in urban environments.

While the majority of projects are distributed across energy, transport, and industrial processes, some specifically address sustainability in buildings—either through the development of cleaner construction systems or the integration of renewable technologies into the built environment.

The call for proposals received 359 submissions, with demand exceeding the available budget ninefold, reflecting the dynamism of Europe’s tech sector in the climate transition. Selected projects will be developed in collaboration with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), which will oversee the grant agreement preparation phase. This initiative reinforces Europe’s technological leadership and its commitment to climate neutrality by 2050, in line with the Green Deal and the Net-Zero Industry Act.
