IntenCity achieves net zero operational carbon through high performance design

Schneider Electric’s IntenCity building in Grenoble achieves net‑zero operational carbon through high energy performance, renewable energy use and a reorganisation strategy that reduces emissions across multiple sites.

Editorial Team

IntenCity, Schneider Electric’s flagship building in Grenoble, is a 26,000 m² commercial facility completed in 2020. The project forms part of a wider reorganisation of the company’s sites in the region, aiming to consolidate 5,000 employees previously distributed across 13 locations into four main buildings. This restructuring seeks to reduce the organisation’s carbon footprint by limiting inter‑site travel and prioritising high‑performing buildings.

The building demonstrates verified net‑zero operational carbon performance, supported by an Energy Use Intensity of 56 kWh/m²/yr and onsite renewable production of 38 kWh/m²/yr, complemented by additional offsite renewable procurement. The project also aligns with Grenoble’s Air Energy Climate Plan by encouraging sustainable mobility, providing electric vehicles for necessary travel and promoting collaboration with local research and innovation partners.

Schneider Electric’s zero‑CO₂ operational model is applied across the site, ensuring no fossil fuel use, full renewable energy supply, digital energy metering and the elimination of SF6 leaks. The company has also reduced floor space in the Grenoble hub by removing older, energy‑consuming buildings and constructing new high‑performance facilities, including IntenCity and Technopole.

Key figures:

  • Building condition: New commercial building forming part of Schneider Electric’s site reorganisation
  • Building type: Commercial
  • Building age: 2020
  • Energy Use Intensity: 56 kWh/m²/yr
  • Energy performance certificate rating: LEED Zero Carbon (103/110)
  • Renewables: Onsite renewable production: 38 kWh/m²/yr; offsite renewable procurement: 18 kWh/yr
