EFdeN 4C shows how a solar‑powered, fully electric dwelling can achieve net‑zero operational carbon through high efficiency, onsite renewable production and integrated bioclimatic design.

The EFdeN 4C house in Bucharest was designed as Romania’s entry for the Solar Decathlon Europe competition, focusing on energy efficiency and adaptability to urban conditions. The project was developed by a multidisciplinary team and later became Romania’s first research centre dedicated to comfort conditions.

The building operates as a fully electric dwelling with automated systems. It integrates a bioclimatic greenhouse as a productive architectural element and uses photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to meet its energy needs. Performance data indicate a net‑zero operational carbon profile, with onsite renewable production exceeding the building’s energy use intensity.
