A cooperative model for sustainable housing

Entrepatios Las Carolinas explores an alternative way of developing and inhabiting urban housing, combining high environmental performance, low-carbon construction and a cooperative model that places the community at the centre of the project.

Editorial Team

Entrepatios Las Carolinas is a 3,313 m² multi-unit residential building located in Madrid and completed in 2020, conceived as a cohousing project based on a right-of-use model. Its sustainability strategy combines high energy efficiency during operation with a reduction in embodied emissions associated with materials and construction processes. The building was designed according to Passivhaus criteria and achieves an energy consumption of 1.65 kWh/m² per year, while its on-site renewable energy production reaches 14.69 kWh/m² per year thanks to a 33.3 kW photovoltaic installation on the roof.

Beyond energy performance, the project incorporates a full life-cycle assessment using the ECÓMETRO ACV tool to evaluate the environmental impacts associated with construction. The choice of a cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure with FSC certification helped reduce the building’s embodied carbon footprint. The building is fully electrified, operates on 100% renewable electricity, and offsets its carbon footprint through ClimateTrade.
