The James Baldwin Multimedia Library and Refugees’ Centre project involves the transformation of two buildings dating from the 1970s in Paris into a 4,406 m² hybrid facility integrating a multimedia library and a centre for refugees. The intervention is based on the conservation of the existing structures and their adaptation to new uses, combined with an extension that redefines the spatial organisation and the relationship with the urban environment. The material approach incorporates wood and raw earth, contributing to indoor environmental quality and user comfort.

From an energy perspective, the building achieves a primary energy consumption of 55.3 kWhep/m²·year according to the RT existing method, with an energy rating of B. The thermal system relies on a district heating network with water radiators and fan coils, while domestic hot water is produced by an individual electric boiler. Ventilation combines natural ventilation strategies, free-cooling, and air handling units with double flow and heat recovery. The project integrates renewable energy systems, including solar photovoltaic, providing 14.00% of energy production.
