The construction industry faces many challenges and risks throughout the supply chain. One of these is the skill shortage which has been caused by Brexit, an ageing workforce and a collective image of the industry which is not attractive to young people. Hence, one of the solutions would be to improve the industry's image among young generations.

The Joint Research Centre has published a report showing the latest status of energy consumption trends in the EU in four main areas: residential buildings, tertiary, transport and industry. The report specifically explores the energy consumption progress from 2000 to 2020.

The Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction (Buildings-GSR) provides an annual snapshot of the progress of the buildings and construction sector on a global scale and also reviewes the policies, financing initiatives, technology developments and solutions to monitor the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

10 EU Energy organisations urge the European Commission to revise the EU heating & cooling strategy. They highlight that there is an urgent need to accelerate the roll-out of renewable and clean heating technologies in buildings and industry in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and respond to the energy crisis.

EUREC has analysed the proposed amendment to the Renewable Energy Directive (“RED III”) and is calling for at least 5% of renewable capacity to come from innovative renewable energy technology. The main goal is to speed up the commercialisation of new, high-quality, European-made renewable energy technology.

The potential of wind and solar energy in the EU still needs to be fully exploited. Indeed the production of electricity is still too dependent on fossil gas and policy choices increased the EU dependency on gas and held back on the EU’s renewable and energy efficiency ambition. This has led to higher inflation rates.

As digitalisation is increasing in the construction and building sector, stakeholders are starting to question the business-as-usual approach. The sector has been experiencing a significant acceleration in technology adoption leading to more efficient processes and value chains. The benefits of this digital transformation have to be highlighted, whereas the challenges must be overcome with increased collaboration.

Bioenergy currently accounts for two-thirds of all renewable energy consumption worldwide. Modern applications of bioenergy can provide for electricity generation, heating in buildings, transport fuels or industrial uses, and can play a main role in the energy transition.
