Beyond Core Building Automation: Expanding the Smart Readiness Indicator Service Catalogue for Complex Buildings
The study proposes expanding the Smart Readiness Indicator with five optional modules to better assess the digitalisation and automation of complex buildings and their technical services.
This article examines the limitations of the current Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) for assessing complex buildings. The European framework covers nine domains, including heating and cooling, ventilation, lighting, electricity, and monitoring and control, but excludes services that can significantly affect energy and water use, safety, resilience, and building operation.
The author proposes moving towards SRI 2.0, retaining these nine domains as a common baseline while adding five service families: mobility and accessibility; safety and security; water and outdoor environmental services; outdoor and site infrastructure; and special energy-intensive services. These modules would cover systems such as lifts, swimming pools, irrigation, refrigeration, kitchens, laundries, laboratories and information and communication technology rooms.
The proposal would activate modules only when relevant to each building type while retaining the existing SRI functionality levels. This would adapt assessments to hotels, hospitals, campuses, supermarkets and large residential complexes without unnecessarily increasing complexity for simpler buildings. However, the paper stresses that the approach remains conceptual and still requires validation through real-world case studies, alongside the development of weighting and implementation rules.
