The digitalisation of the built environment is moving into a new phase in which data ceases to be a passive resource and becomes a decision-making tool. In an interview published by the European DTERBIM project, Stathis Stamatopoulos, a researcher at the Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS), explains how the combination of artificial intelligence, BIM and digital twins can improve both the design and operation of buildings.
His work focuses on developing predictive models capable of forecasting energy consumption, optimising comfort conditions and identifying issues before they become operational problems. At the same time, the team is advancing a decision-support tool that enables the comparison of design and renovation alternatives based on energy, economic, environmental, circularity and accessibility indicators.
Beyond technological advances, Stamatopoulos highlights the need for a cultural shift: ensuring that digital twins evolve from an emerging innovation into a standard infrastructure for owners, managers and industry professionals, thereby contributing to more efficient and sustainable building management.
