Breaking energy silos: exploring a modern and energy efficient system with InEExS

In a six-part blog series, InEExS spotlights solutions to help accelerate Europe’s transition to a smart, resilient, competitive, and more efficient energy system. Each blog will explore the solutions and technologies from energy communities to the role of blockchain in energy management.

This blog series examines how Europe’s clean energy transition is giving rise to integrated energy services, drawing on concrete lessons from the LIFE‑funded InEExS pilots in Spain, Germany, Greece, and the Nordic countries. Through these real‑world demonstrations—from tenant‑centred solar self‑consumption in Berlin to community‑driven digital engagement in Crevillent, heat‑as‑a‑service models in Greece, and smart home flexibility services in Scandinavia—the series shows how long‑standing silos between electricity, heating, mobility, and efficiency are beginning to dissolve. Each article unpacks how utilities, cooperatives, ESCOs, and technology providers are experimenting with new ways of working together to deliver more seamless, customer‑focused solutions.

Alongside these practical examples, the series explores the wider policy, financial, and organisational conditions that determine whether integrated services can scale. It looks at the evolving EU regulatory landscape, emerging contractual frameworks, and the new role of systems integrators needed to coordinate complex multi‑technology offerings. By weaving together insights from pilots across four regions, the series offers a forward‑looking perspective on how Europe can build a more efficient, flexible, and user‑friendly energy system—one capable of supporting a fair and successful decarbonisation journey.
