Green Idea House is the refurbishment of an existing home designed with the objective of achieving a net-positive energy balance and net-zero carbon emissions. The project addressed energy, water, materials, waste and toxicity in an integrated manner, prioritising demand reduction and resource efficiency before introducing more complex solutions.
Among its most notable outcomes is the recycling of 97.5% of demolition waste through a selective deconstruction process that enabled the reuse of existing materials and gave a second life to those that could not be incorporated into the project. The water strategy includes rainwater harvesting through a 1,200-gallon tank used for landscape irrigation. In parallel, careful attention to the building envelope reduced air infiltration by 80%, improving both energy efficiency and indoor comfort.
According to the published information, the house generates more renewable energy than it consumes annually and produces sufficient surplus energy to support the use of two electric vehicles.
