The RICS Surveying Skills Report 2026 provides a global assessment of skills shortages and workforce development across the surveying profession. Based on responses from 3,698 members worldwide, the report explores the impact of talent shortages on productivity, innovation, and project delivery. It identifies key emerging competencies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital technologies, critical thinking, communication and sustainability. The report also examines barriers to upskilling, career progression challenges, and practical strategies for attracting, retaining, and developing talent to meet the future needs of the built and natural environment sectors.

The report is particularly relevant for the buildings and construction sector, where increasing demands related to decarbonisation, regulatory compliance and digital transformation are reshaping professional roles. It highlights the growing need for competencies in data analytics, digital tools, AI and sustainability, all of which are becoming essential for delivering high-performing, resource-efficient built environments. By examining how skills shortages affect the profession’s capacity to meet demand and adapt to emerging challenges, the report provides valuable insights for organisations involved in building design, construction, asset management and the delivery of energy-efficient and sustainable buildings.
