As more home buyers consider the sustainability factor, green homes are becoming more popular. But what is a green home? Loosely defined as properties that adhere to sustainable standards through their construction and operation, green homes have a lower impact on the environment by offsetting carbon footprint and saving money on electricity.

Climate change, polluted bodies of air, land, and water, these environmental crises are just some of the most complex problems the world is dealing with up to this day. One of the significant contributors to this problem is the construction industry, which accounts for 4% of particulate air pollution, more water pollution occurrences than any other industry, and thousands of noise complaints yearly.

Plants are more and more used in the urban renewal projects because they can make cities more sustainable and also improve health and well-being of citizens. Luckily there are many projects and cities already implementing these type of nature-based solutions.

Two case studies in Spain have been used as Living Labs to demonstrate the results of the BIM4Ren project in real renovation process of residential building pursuing different purposes. All have been energy retrofitted from 2019 to 2022 by the contractor company specialised in renovation and BIM4ren consortium member, Kursaal Group. 

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, single-family homes account for 80% of the nation’s overall housing energy expenditure, with multiuse housing comprising 15% and the remainder coming from mobile homes. Most of the difference is due to heating and cooling costs — it’s far more economical and green in apartment buildings. 

The Rome City Council has announced the establishment of a Laboratory titled “Laboratorio Roma050 – il Futuro della Metropoli Mondo", proposed by the Italian architect Stefano Boeri. The project will involve 12 young architects and urban planners who are going to ecologically transform the capital into a climate neutral city.
