Addressing the construction skills shortage in Europe

The lack of construction skilled workers in Europe acts as a barrier to growth. How can it be solved?
Giulia Leghissa

A severe shortage of construction workers in Europe is impeding economic growth, prompting industry leaders to confront these issues. The European Federation of Engineering Consultancy Associations cites post-war conflicts, energy costs, and inflation as exacerbating factors.

Competition for skilled workers is driving up wages, challenging companies across the sector. The scarcity extends beyond engineers to blue-collar roles like crane operators and carpenters.

Despite reliance on immigrant labor, retaining workers remains a challenge. To attract talent, the industry must rebrand as innovative and socially impactful, leveraging technology and emphasising career progression. Addressing diversity and reforming education are crucial for long-term solutions, requiring collaborative efforts from industry, government, and academia.
