The benefits of smart technology for buildings

Smart technologies in buildings can reduce energy use and energy bills, thus they cut carbon emissions.
Giulia Leghissa

The EU is intensifying its focus on energy-efficient "smart" technologies in buildings to combat climate change and reduce energy consumption. Buildings are major energy consumers in the EU, often relying on fossil fuels and lacking insulation. The EU has committed to tougher energy-saving targets, aiming for at least a 55% emissions reduction by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.

Projects like SMART2B, funded by the EU, are using connected sensors and switches to monitor and control existing building equipment, making them more efficient. These technologies can help meet the EU's energy-efficiency goals and promote sustainability, especially as energy costs rise and environmental concerns grow.
