Beyond energy efficiency: Plus Energy Buildings

The overlooked values of Sustainable Plus Energy Buildings and Neighbourhoods explored at EU Week of Regions and Cities.
Editorial Team

Multiple benefits of Plus Energy Buildings have a great role to play in the effort to make buildings more sustainable. However, the lack of data, measurement standards, or even the usage of different terms makes hard to identify and quantify them, let alone to communicate them to different stakeholders. These issues are being tackled by the H2020 EU-funded projects Cultural-E, syn.ikia and EXCESS. To raise awareness of the multiple benefits of Sustainable Plus Energy buildings (PEBs) and Neighbourhoods (SPENs), a workshop has been organized in the framework of the EU Week of Regions and Cities.

During the workshops, speakers shared insights from each project and provided evidence of the importance of a multiple-benefit approach when it comes to design plus energy buildings and neighbourhoods. The participation of an highly qualified and interdisciplinary audience discussed the first results and activities that researchers are carrying on within the projects.

If it is true that the European policies are not yet ready on the subject, the workshop clearly showed a research path meant to fully unveil the topic of plus energy buildings and neighbourhoods, and to provide clear answers and quantifications ready to be integrated in the next EU policies on the building sector.

Both the recording of the session and the presentations are available.
