Can carbonised wood work as a building material?
The technique of using carbonised wood for buildings´ facades is an ancient and popular Japanese technique which has reached the whole world.

The popular technique of using carbonised wood (called in Japan as Shou Sugi Ban) is 300 years old. It was first used in fishing villages as the material could not be damaged by the sea. The process of "carbonisation" consists of burning the outer layer of the wood with fire (now charring the boards with a torch). In this way the material´s external fibers react and make the wood immune to termites, fungi, and others.
The whole process consists of four steps in order to reach a ready-to-use material for facades. The carbonised wood becomes more durable, resistant to external events and different climates, and thus it is becoming popular also in Western architecture.
