Circularity: the centrepiece at La Biennale
Carlo Ratti's Circular Economy Manifesto for the 19th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice calls for sustainable, circular design practices that eliminate waste, regenerate natural systems, and leave a lasting legacy in the built environment.
Carlo Ratti, as the Curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia titled 'Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective' (10 May-23 November 2025), introduces a Circular Economy Manifesto aimed at addressing challenges in the built environment.
This initiative, developed with Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, emphasises creating sustainable, circular designs that leave a lasting legacy rather than serving as temporary showcases.
The Manifesto encourages participants to eliminate waste, circulate materials, and regenerate natural systems, reflecting a commitment to combating climate change. It outlines seven guiding principles for design, focusing on whole-life carbon, the use of reclaimed materials, zero construction waste, and enhancing ecological value, urging collaborative, innovative solutions for a sustainable future.
