Collaboration and knowledge sharing led to new NHS rules on net zero buildings

Editorial Team

Industry and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) have welcomed the new NHS guidance on reaching net zero emissions in buildings. This Net Zero Buildings Standard will apply to all new buildings starting from October 2023 and will be fundamental to reach the UK´s 2050 net zero carbon goal.

NHS trusts will need to submit reports on net zero design, operational energy and carbon, and whole-life carbon assessment when renovating buildings. There will be regular monitoring of processes and outcomes throughout design, construction and use, and it will enforce carbon benchmarking.
