How to boost energy efficiency in European buildings: New video from the Concerted Action Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (CA EPBD)
The Concerted Action on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (CA EPBD) is a collaborative initiative involving EU Member States and the European Commission, aimed at enhancing the implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The initiative is co-funded by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) through the LIFE programme. The CA EPBD has introduced its newly launched YouTube channel, which includes a video detailing who they are and the work they undertake.
Launched in 2005, the CA EPBD has undergone several phases, with the current sixth phase commencing in November 2022 and set to run until October 2027. This phase focuses on the transposition and implementation of the amended EPBD Directive 2018/844/EU and the revised EPBD (EU/2024/1275). The EPBD is a pivotal piece of EU legislation, designed to unlock the energy savings potential in buildings, which account for approximately 40% of the EU's energy consumption and 35% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.
The Danish Energy Agency coordinates the CA EPBD, which is structured around nine central teams, such as National Building Renovation Plans and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), the relationship between Building Renovation Passports and Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), and the deep renovations within these national plans and passports. There are also teams addressing financing initiatives, including one-stop-shop services and incentives, zero-emission buildings and the decarbonisation of heating and cooling systems, the integration of smart building technologies and automation, and the reinforcement and modernisation of building codes and technical requirements.
Regular plenary meetings serve as a platform for information exchange, supported by a web platform and national reports. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of shared knowledge and best practices in advancing energy efficiency across Europe.
