On 8 November, ahead of the COP29 in Baku, the Green Building Council (GBC) network urged bold action to decarbonise the built environment, which accounts for nearly 40% of global emissions. Despite the sector's failure to meet climate goals, it offers over 40% of the solutions needed for energy intensity improvements by 2030.

The GBC network called for governments to enhance Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), prioritise climate finance for building decarbonisation, and strengthen resilience through adaptation planning. Additionally, they urged more countries to commit to the Buildings Breakthrough initiative, which aims for near-zero-emission buildings by 2030.
