Decarbonising buildings with plus energy solutions: Key takeaways from the CULTURAL-E Final conference

The CULTURAL-E project recently hit a big milestone with its Final Conference, held on February 7, 2025, at Greenbizz in Brussels, Belgium. This event marked the end of years of dedicated research and teamwork towards developing solutions for Plus Energy Buildings (PEB).

During the CULTURAL-E project final conference, organised and promoted by the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE – CAE), the participating experts shared their experiences and outcomes. Annamaria Belleri from Eurac Research shared insights on design guidelines, while Beatriz Pineda, from RMIT Europe, introduced the PEB HUB repository. The panel discussion featured experts from various universities and research centres, focusing on PEB design challenges and opportunities.

Key takeaways from the conference included the importance of adopting a social-practice approach to align technologies with residents' needs. Innovations like heat recovery systems, efficient windows, and decentralised heat pumps were highlighted, despite integration challenges. Optimising building performance requires tailored solutions based on climate and cultural contexts, supported by data-driven models. The economic viability of PEBs can be challenging due to market conditions and subsidies, but they offer long-term benefits through reduced energy costs.
