Decarbonising heating: an end to financial incentives for fossil fuel boilers by 2025

30 October 2024
The European Commission has issued guidance on phasing out financial incentives for new stand-alone fossil fuel boilers by January 1, 2025. Support will still be allowed for hybrid systems that utilise significant renewable energy and for existing approved incentives. This initiative is part of efforts to achieve a decarbonised building stock by 2050.

The European Commission has released guidance to assist EU countries in implementing the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. This initial document clarifies that starting January 1, 2025, no financial incentives can be offered for new stand-alone boilers powered by fossil fuels, including natural gas, oil, and coal.

Public bodies are encouraged not to support such installations. However, incentives for hybrid heating systems using renewable energy can continue if the renewable share is significant.

Existing EU-approved incentives related to fossil fuel boilers and those already granted may still be disbursed. The directive aims for a fully decarbonised building stock by 2050, with provisions to be fully transposed by May 2026.
