Efficient buildings: The key to energy affordability

As Europeans struggle with rising energy bills, a growing scarcity of affordable housing, and the complexities posed by electrification, enhancing energy efficiency in buildings may be the crucial missing piece.

The new Affordable Energy Action Plan poses a complex challenge for EU policymakers. An estimated investment of over €100 billion over the next five years is required to expand the continent’s renewable electricity grids and improve the energy performance of buildings—efforts that are critical to ensuring a stable and sustainable energy future.

Improving energy efficiency in buildings is seen as a crucial part of the solution. Research by Eurima and the International Copper Association Europe indicates that optimising a building’s envelope could deliver average energy bill savings of up to 50% over 30 years. Focusing first on the worst-performing properties could yield significant benefits in terms of reduced energy use, enhanced indoor environments, and increased property values.

A forward-looking strategy is already taking shape, with initiatives such as the European Renovation Wave and the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) providing a robust, future-proof regulatory framework. By addressing the inefficiencies of both buildings and grid infrastructure, the EU can deliver a more secure, affordable, and sustainable energy system for its citizens and industries.
