Australian states and territories are updating tenancy laws to include mandatory heating and cooling for renters.

Dr. Chris Martin from University of New South Wales highlights that landlords must ensure properties are safe and comfortable, potentially requiring air conditioning or heating units.

Victoria leads with new standards, mandating fixed heaters and consulting on cooling units and energy efficiency for rental properties under the Residential Tenancies and Residential Regulations 2024, expected to finalize in October 2024.

Other regions are encouraged to adopt similar phased standards. Enhanced rental standards might raise costs but improve energy efficiency and reduce tenants' expenses

A 2022 Better Renting report revealed many Australian rentals are below WHO's safe indoor temperature of 18 degrees in winter.
