EPBD recast – A summary of the strengthened Energy Performance of Buildings Directive
The European Commission celebrates the final adoption of the strengthened Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, a cornerstone of the European Green Deal.
Member States are tasked with reducing building emissions, targeting a 16% reduction in residential energy use by 2030 and renovating the worst-performing non-residential buildings by 16% by 2030 and 26% by 2033.
The directive mandates zero-emission standards for new buildings by 2030 and aims to alleviate energy poverty by implementing targeted financing measures to incentivise and support renovations, particularly in buildings with a higher prevalence of energy-poor households.
Additionally, it promotes sustainable mobility efforts, encourages solar power adoption, and prohibits subsidies for fossil fuel boilers from 2025.
This initiative aligns with EU's aim for energy independence and sustainability.
