EU building stock is still off track to reach climate neutrality by 2050

According to the EU Buildings Climate Tracker (EU BCT) actions still need to be made for climate neutrality in buildings.

The EU must urgently enhance building decarbonisation efforts to achieve climate neutrality. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) is crucial for emissions reduction, and negotiations on its recast are expected to conclude this year. The Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE) emphasises the need for bold EPBD provisions, including minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for renovations targeting the worst-performing buildings.

The tracker by BPIE reveals a decarbonisation gap in the EU building stock, with the 2020 value at 7.8 instead of the required 18.1 points, necessitating a yearly progress of 4.7 points for 2030 targets. Central & Eastern Europe faces a more alarming gap, requiring 5.7 points annually for 2030 alignment.
