EU legislators aiming for a new energy efficiency law in 2023

The European Commission proposed a revision of the Energy Efficiency Directive in 2021 to foster energy saving targets, and reducing primary and final energy consumption by 2030. The energy crisis has reinforced even more this need, and in May 2022 the European Commission updated the proposed target for overall energy savings under the law.

 

Negotiators are discussing that Member States shall ensure that municipalities with over 45,000 citizens prepare local heating and cooling plans, and they would make obligatory the application of the "energy efficiency first" principle for any energy project costing over €100 million.
