The golden rules for staying cool at home

25 February 2025
Amid record heatwaves, Australians struggle to find cool homes due to poor insulation and outdated standards, making smart inspections and energy assessments essential.

Australia is experiencing record-breaking heatwaves, highlighting the challenge of finding heat-resistant homes.

Many homes lack effective cooling features, and reliable information on thermal performance is scarce. To avoid overheating, prospective buyers and renters should inquire about insulation, double-glazed windows, house size, and energy assessments.

During inspections, they should assess the colour of external walls, internal surfaces, window placements, shading options, ceiling fans, air-conditioning systems, garden design, and the position of the afternoon sun.

Australia’s housing standards lag behind international benchmarks, with renters and low-income households most affected. Improved regulations are needed for better thermal comfort.
