Green skills shortage in the UK built environment: urgent calls for training and upskilling

Built environment professionals face a critical shortage of sustainability skills, crucial for competitiveness and compliance, with urgent calls to invest in training and upskilling.

New data from the University College of Estate Management (UCEM) reveals a critical need for green skills among built environment professionals in UK. 

A significant 77% believe their organisation risks losing its competitive edge without sustainability skills, and 88% deem these skills relevant across all roles. Despite this, 88% report a shortage of such skills, and 73% find recruitment challenging. 

With 75% expecting the demand for green skills to grow, UCEM's Stephen Bartle stresses the urgency of addressing this skills gap to meet legal and economic opportunities. The survey highlights fierce competition for talent, with 76% vying for skilled professionals and 87% emphasising upskilling.

Key desired skills include energy optimisation and carbon reduction (91%), and enhancing building health and sustainability performance (89%).
