Lack of skilled workers jeopardise efforts to reduce energy consumption in buildings

Skilled construction workers are essential to reach renovation and energy efficiency targets of EU building stock. How to solve this shortage?
Giulia Leghissa

A shortage of skilled workers is hindering efforts to reduce energy consumption in European buildings, with 75% of the current stock performing poorly. This issue, highlighted during a Belgian Renovation Week, underscores the urgency for renovations as buildings consume 40% of the EU's final energy.

The EU aims for zero-emissions in buildings by 2050 but faces challenges due to a lack of skilled workers, particularly affecting the deployment of heat pumps and solar photovoltaics. Efforts to attract and train technicians are underway, yet the deficit persists. Without addressing this, meeting renovation targets and transitioning to sustainable energy sources will be impossible to achieve.
