MEPs have approved the agreement on the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive

On Tuesday 12th March, the European Parliament voted in favour of the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
Editorial Team

The proposed revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive in the EU targets a climate-neutral building sector by 2050, aiming for progressively reduced greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. It mandates zero-emission new buildings by 2028 for public authorities and 2030 for all. Member states must renovate worst-performing buildings and implement emission-reduction measures, including solar installations and phasing out fossil fuel boilers by 2040.

Financial incentives are provided for hybrid heating systems. Exemptions apply to certain buildings. The directive, backed by the European Parliament, addresses energy poverty and supports the European Green Deal. It awaits formal endorsement by the Council of Ministers. This aligns with the EU's 'Fit for 55' package and Conference on the Future of Europe objectives.
