New EU commission takes office: focus on sustainability and urban development
On 1 December 2024, President Ursula von der Leyen began her second mandate with a new team of Commissioners focused on sustainability and urban development.
Key priorities include enforcing the European Green Deal, with goals for affordable housing, climate action, digitalisation, mobility, social inclusion, and equality.
Key figures include Teresa Ribera Rodríguez (Executive Vice-President for a Clean, Just and Competitive Transition), Jessika Rosswall (Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience, and Circular Economy), Dan Jørgensen (Commissioner for Energy and Housing), Wopke Hoekstra (Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero, and Clean Growth), and Raffaele Fitto (Executive Vice-President for Cohesion and Reforms).
The Commission will prioritise energy price reductions, clean energy investment, biodiversity, circular economy measures, water resilience, and decarbonisation, alongside urban development and sustainable tourism initiatives.
