The power of decarbonisation of heat pumps

Heat pumps are now a well-established technology, and although still some challenges ahead, they are increasing worldwide.
Giulia Leghissa

Heat pumps offer a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-based heating, with potential to significantly reduce emissions. Despite being in use since the mid-20th century, heat pump technology is gaining momentum, marked by 11% global sales growth in 2022 and a 40% increase in European installations, driven by the Russia-Ukraine war's energy crisis. China leads global installations, with China and Japan holding over half of new heat pump technology patents since 2010.

With advancements allowing higher temperatures, heat pumps could revolutionise industrial manufacturing, potentially cutting global emissions by 500 million tons by 2030, equivalent to removing all European cars from roads. Challenges include meeting rising demand and ensuring a robust electrical grid.
