Preserving Cairo’s heritage: Dr. May al-Ibrashy’s impact on urban regeneration
Cairo, known for its rich cultural heritage, faces challenges in preserving its historic sites amidst urban growth and climate change.
Dr. May al-Ibrashy, an architect and conservationist, leads efforts to integrate heritage conservation with urban regeneration.
Through her work with the Megawra–Built Environment Collective, she revitalises historic neighborhoods like Al-Khalifa, combining preservation with community involvement.
Key projects include the restoration of the Al-Imam Al-Shafi’i Mausoleum and the Yahya al-Sabih Mausoleum, incorporating modern interventions and community engagement.
Al-Ibrashy also works on adaptive reuse projects like the Safiyy al-Din Jawhar Dome and Al-Khalifa Park, demonstrating how heritage can drive sustainable urban development.
